A Barrister in the Marine Team at Bartons and a passionate sailor, Tristan represents clients at the Admiralty Court, The High Court, Coroners’ Inquests, RYA disciplinary hearings and in prosecutions brought by marine regulatory bodies including the MCA, IFCA, MMO, EA and the HSE.
Tristan has contributed to MAIB reports following serious incidents and undertakes a broad range of Marine litigation, Fisheries matters, investigations following fatalities, collisions and advises in PACE interviews under caution where authorities such as the MCA, IFCA, MMO, MAIB, the HSE and the EA are involved. He also handles marine mortgages and the sale and purchase of high value vessels.
Tristan has a MSc in Marine Safety (with major component taken at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2016) and has sailed all of his life. He has owned and personally refitted a number of yachts and cruised much of Northern Europe. Tristan is a competent sailor/racing skipper and has detailed technical/mechanical knowledge. He also holds a current RYA Yacht Masters certificate, an International Certificate of Competence and the RYA Powerboat 1 and 2. Tristan’s passion and interest in engineering and technical marine matters makes him well positioned to manage detailed disputes.
Tristan uses his keen interest and knowledge as a board member of Dartmouth Harbour Authority, providing legal advice in all aspects and is a member of the RYA standing committee for the South West region.
